EN 10216-5:2004, titled " - Technical Delivery Conditions - Part 5: Stainless Steel Tubes," is a detailed technical specification established by the European Union for seamless steel tubes used in pressure applications. The standard was drafted by the ECISS/TC29 "Steel Tubes and Fittings" Technical Committee, with the secretariat appointed by UNI, and was officially published in 2004. Before March 2005, this standard held the same status as national standards within the European Union.
EN 10216-5:2004 specifies the technical delivery conditions for seamless steel tubes with circular cross-sections made from austenitic stainless steel (including creep-resistant steel) and duplex stainless steel, intended for use in pressure vessels and corrosion-resistant applications, under ambient, high-temperature, and low-temperature conditions. These tubes are widely used in various industries such as petroleum, chemicals, energy, and shipping due to their high strength, corrosion resistance, and high-temperature and low-temperature performance.

The standard first clarifies the material requirements for the tubes. Austenitic stainless steel is widely used due to its excellent corrosion resistance, while creep-resistant steel maintains stable performance at high temperatures. Additionally, the standard covers austenitic-ferritic steel, which combines the advantages of austenitic and ferritic steels, offering higher strength and better corrosion resistance.
Regarding the dimensions and specifications of the steel tubes, the EN 10216-5:2004 standard specifies detailed ranges for outer diameter and wall thickness. These dimensions are selected to meet the requirements of various application scenarios, such as high-pressure pipelines, heat exchangers, and chemical equipment. Additionally, the standard specifies the tolerance grades for in accordance with EN 10216-5:2004, ensuring dimensional accuracy and interchangeability of the pipes.
Delivery technical conditions are one of the core components of the standard. They cover various aspects, including steelmaking processes, delivery conditions, specified ranges for sulfur content, product analysis, and additional mechanical property tests. These technical conditions are designed to ensure that the quality of the steel pipes meets the requirements of specific applications. For example, for austenitic corrosion-resistant steel tubes with wall thicknesses exceeding 60 mm, the standard requires room-temperature mechanical property tests to verify their strength and toughness. Similarly, for austenitic creep-resistant steel tubes with wall thicknesses exceeding 50 mm, similar tests are also required.
Furthermore, the EN 10216-5:2004 standard specifies non-destructive testing methods for steel tubes. Non-destructive testing is a method of detecting internal defects in steel tubes without damaging them, including eddy current testing, ultrasonic testing, and radiographic testing. These methods can detect defects such as cracks, inclusions, and bubbles in steel tubes, thereby ensuring the quality and safety of seamless steel tubes for pressure applications by EN 10216-5:2004.
In addition to the technical content mentioned above, the standard also specifies the information that purchasers must provide in their inquiries and purchase orders, such as quantity, terms, dimensions, steel grade, and test types. This information helps suppliers accurately understand procurement requirements and provide steel pipes that meet the specified criteria.
In practical applications, the EN 10216-5:2004 standard plays a crucial role in ensuring the quality and safety of seamless steel pipes. It serves not only as a technical agreement between steel tube manufacturers and purchasers but also as an important basis for regulatory authorities to conduct quality supervision and inspections. By adhering to this standard, companies can produce high-quality EN 10216-5:2004 seamless steel tubes for pressure applications, meet market demands, and enhance competitiveness.
With advancements in technology and industrial development, the application areas of seamless steel tubes continue to expand, and the quality and performance requirements for steel tubes are becoming increasingly stringent. Therefore, the EN 10216-5:2004 standard is also being continuously updated and improved to adapt to market demands and technological advancements. In the future, we can anticipate the emergence of more advanced and stringent EN 10216-5:2004 standards for, providing stronger support for the development of various industries.
